wrestling - Tournament table training- Jan 4th

Team

As you know our own Vestavia Invitational held at Liberty Park is coming up on January 9th. The success of every youth wrestling tournament is largely  a function of parent help. One of the critical areas where volunteers are needed is table help. Each table will have a clock operator, scorer and bopper.

In the past we have set aside one night to train our volunteer table helpers on the mechanics of each duty. On Monday, January 4th we will use our normal 5:30 practice at the church to train table help on how to fill out score sheets and run clocks. The boys will wrestle live inter squad  matches while the coaches officiate and the volunteer  parents rotate score sheet and clock duties.

The unfortunate consequence of this needed process is that the boys spend much of the time watching while others wrestle. We will run as many matches simultaneously as space allows and attempt to get everyone at least one match. It would be helpful and appreciated if the parents who helped last year would assist  those learning during this process. I will bring score sheets, clocks and ankle bands.

If all parents that plan to help will find me before practice I will go over a brief explanation on how to keep score and then you can practice on a live match.

Thanks For Your Help

Dean Paugh

Liberty park wrestling tournament sign up

Team,

Our team is hosting a tournament January 9th at Liberty Park Middle school. We need EVERYONE to help out so our tournament can run smoothly. Below you will find 2 different links. One is for signing up to help run the mats ( scoring, timing, bopping, directing) the other link is for everything else (tickets, concessions, hospitality, etc.) Special thanks to Susie Mullins for setting this system up for us!

Please go to these links and sign up for a slot to help. Descriptions are on the links. This tournament will be coming very quickly after our holiday vacation, so start thinking about it now.

If you are interested in heading up concessions (purchasing items, getting vendors) OR hospitality ( planning meals, getting food donations) please let me know.

We will take any food donations from vendors for the hospitality room. If you have any connections, please ask how they can help us. We ARE tax deductable.

We also would like for EVERYONE to bring a case of bottled water for the hospitality room. BUT DO NOT BRING IT UNTIL THE DAY OF THE TOURNAMENT!
(it's not an easy task to carry around 50 cases of water!)

It's Christmas Eve, I hope you and yours have a wonderful time during this holiday season.

Rebels together,
Allyson McLean

Clay Results

Parents,

Another good tournament.  We had small number of kids but the ones there wrestled well.

Please let your team mom no if you are planning to go to Tallassee on January 2nd.  I need to know so we can have enough coaches at each section.  If we have a low turnout for bantam we may not send our bantam wrestlers to Tallassee.  So please let your team mom now as soon as possible.

Extra practice options for 1st and 2nd year wrestlers

Parents,

It is with great excitement that we are going to expand our practice options.  We are overwhelmed with the interest your sons are showing to have extra practice times.  As we have spoken to several of you that have first and second year wrestlers we have received feedback that your sons would like to have extra practice time.

We are going to open 2 additional practice times lead by Christian on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:00 at the Crossroad’s Church.  The cost will be an extra $100 to be able to attend these 2 practices.  These practices are not designed to replace Monday and Thursday but will be design to support.

These time slots will be for 1st and 2nd year wrestlers only.  This practice will be focused on technically training, drilling and live wrestling we will not be playing games at this practice.  If your son is really not committed to the extra practice time then he will probably get burnout and quit.  Please make sure your son is dedicated to making the extra effort before signing him up.  If you do sign up and your son does not show that he is dedicated to the extra practice within the first 2 weeks we will refund ½ of your money and give that spot to another wrestler.  After 2 weeks there will be no refund but we reserve the right to remove your son from the extra practice if he is distracting from the group.  I cannot emphasis enough the importance that your son has to have the desire to add the extra practice we do not want to burn out our young wrestlers.

Christian will be the only coach at these practices.  Due to the limited number of coaches available at this time it will be open to the first 24 wrestlers. (We will need to make sure they have a good practice partner)

If you are interested please email me your son’s name, age and weight and bring your check Monday.  The check will hold your spot.

We will start the extra practice this Tuesday.

David

Wrestling practice options-clarification

Parents,

I want to clarify our practice options that are available.

Here is our practice schedule:

1)      Our traditional youth wrestling practice is 2 days a week and practice is Monday and Thursday.  If you paid for the 2 day option and If your son has wrestled less than 3 years they need to attend the Monday and Thursday youth practice.

2)      Our 6:00 Tuesday, 6:00 Wednesday and 2:30 Sunday practices are for advanced wrestlers only.  They must have a minimum of 3 years of experience or have placed 1-4 in the state tournament to attend these practices.

3)      The 3:30 Wednesday open practice time needs to be scheduled with Christian in advance and is open to anyone.

If your son is a first or second year wrestler we believe that 2 days a week is the appropriate amount of practice.  Our desire is to keep it fun and let them learn the basics.  We do not want to burnout our beginner wrestlers.  After the second year of wrestling most kids will have the basics of wrestling and have developed the mental toughness to take wrestling to the next level.  Our goal is to develop wrestlers with a long term focus so our wrestlers have successful middle school and high school wrestling careers.

So you can judge for yourself here are some minimal expectations we expect from our advance wrestlers.

1)      A master of the basics of wrestling

2)      Mental toughness

3)      Positive attitude

4)      Is your son getting 100% out of the current practice.  This means your son is giving 100% all the time.

5)      Practice attendance

6)      Tournament participation and placement in regular tournaments(non-beginner tournaments)

As a reminder wrestling is a individual  sport and your son’s willingness to work hard in practice has direct correlation on how quickly he advances.  He must be willing to work hard, have intensity and develop mentally.  Please communicate with your son the importance of working hard in practice.

If you would like to discuss please come speak with me at practice.

David
