VWC wrestling update and Rebel Challenge results

Parents,

Tournament:

Thank you for all your help this weekend.  This weekend was one of the best run tournament I have been a part of in 5 years.  There is no way we could run a tournament without your help.  Thank you.

I know I cannot thank everyone by name but we had several teams that made a great contribution.

1.       Allyson Mclean who help lead our volunteer assignments, concessions and hospitality

2.       Kim Smith, Lisa Boland and Amy Hamilton who lead the hospitality.  I also want to thank Pat Boland for cooking 90 lbs of BBQ  for the hospitality room.  It was gone in 10 minutes.

3.       Lee Yielding – Moving mats

4.       Jeff Segars and Chad Merrill from VHHS who lead the staging area.  What a great job.  Thanks to both of you and all the high school students who worked at our tournament.

5.       Coaches- Again great job!  We have the best coaching staff of any club.

Wrestling:

Our kids did very well this weekend.  We had 97 VWC kids participate in this weekend’s tournaments.  The results are posted on our website.

The coaches are seeing progress made every week.  We are seeing wrestlers execute new moves with success, we see kids winning their first match, we see kids getting more pins, we see kids not getting pinned, we see kids winning multiple matches, we see kids getting mentally tougher and we see more kids starting to place in each tournament.

We need to keep improving on this momentum for the next 2 tournaments.  Please help us by making sure your son is at practice and he comes prepared to work. We can make great progress in the next 3 weeks if we continue to work hard.  Remember our competition is also getting better.

The State wrestling tournament is February 20th.  We only have one more tournament before the state tournament which is the AWC tournament February 3rd.  Let me encourage everyone to continue to participate in both the AWC and State tournament.  Competing is one of the best ways to keep improving.

Also the more kids we have wrestling the more points we can score as team.  The state tournament is the only tournament that has team awards.  At the state tournament they will give a team trophy for 1st-4th for the following:  Bantam, Intermediate, Novice, Schoolboy and Overall.

Let’s keep up the hard work and focus on the next 3 weeks.

David

Attached is the wrestling schedule for tonight and tomorrow.  Also please review the staging process with your son one more time

Rebel Challenge Wrestling Tournament

A USA Team Alabama Youth Wrestling Tournament

For more information contact:  Christian Staylor 757/362-2005

Please note:

  • Friday weigh is at Pizitz Middle School not VHHS due to high school basketball game.  Wrestling Saturday will be at VHHS.
  • Bantam and School Boy divisions are combined and will wrestle at 8:30
  • We will run this tournament with a staging area.  We will not assign a weight class to each wrestling mat; instead wrestlers will be called to a central staging area and given a mat assignment for each bout.  We expect that by using a staging area we can reduce the wrestling schedule by @ 2 hours.  Attached is a document discussing the staging process please review with your wrestlers.

Staging process:

Coaches

This will be the gym setup for the Vestavia youth tournament. (See attached pdf) To try to be more efficient, we are planning on staging the wrestlers.  This will help by having less down time on each mat and allow us to run a faster tournament.

In order for this to work, we need all coaches to cover the staging process with their wrestlers and parents before the tournament starts. When a wrestler's weight‐class is called he should report to the staging area. He will then be assigned a mat (1-8) for his match. We will have VHHS varsity wrestlers escort the wrestlers to their mat.  Just to be clear a wrestler will not be on the same mat for every match.

Process:

  1. The staging director will call an entire weigh class to the staging area and assign each match to a mat.
  2. We will run all weight classes through the championship finals before we start any consolation matches.
  3. When we make announcements for wrestlers to report to the staging area, we will distinguish between championships and consolation brackets to clarify which wrestlers need to report to the staging area.  This way wrestler will know if they need to report to staging when their weight class is called.  In the event of a wrestle back this process will also allow the 2nd place wrestler time to rest.  Please communicate to your wrestler the difference between consolation and championship brackets.  When a wrestler loses he does not need to report back to staging until we start calling consolation matches.
  4. Round robin brackets will be assigned to a specific mat and the round robin will be run from the table.
  5. The staging director will keep 3 matches at a mat at all times.  1) wrestling, 2) on deck and 3) in the hole
  6. We will have table worker assigned to each table to keep the called wrestlers at the mat.

Please go over the staging process, where the staging area is, and where all the mats are with your wrestlers.  We hope this makes for a much faster day.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Vestavia Invitational tournament

Parents,

Attached are the team results.  We had 86 kids wrestle and 32 placed 1-4.  The results will also be posted on our website later this afternoon.

Tournament:

Thank you to all of you that helped with this big undertaking.  I know I cannot thank everyone by name but we had several teams of people that made this the best run tournament of the year.  I had several coaches and parents from visiting school that come up to me and personally thanked Vestavia for running such a great tournament.  All of you should be very proud of the job you did we continued to represent the community of Vestavia with excellence.  I have been doing this a long time and I have never hosted a tournament were we were cleanup and home by 9:00.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

1)      Team Allyson McLean, Mark Hamilton and Susie Mullions:  Thank you for all your organization and preparation.

2)      Concessions team:  Thank you for all your help keeping our guest feed.

3)      Registration Team:  Thank you for being so dedicated to sit near the very cold door all day.

4)      Team Lisa Boland for managing the hospitality room.  Keeping all the coaches and volunteers feed is not an easy job.

5)      Coach Adams, Liberty Park parents, Liberty Park wrestlers, Liberty Park staff:  All of you were awesome.  Coach Adams did a tremendous job of helping us run this tournament, his dedication and leadership allowed us to make this one of the most efficiently run tournaments.  All of you represented Liberty Park Middle School very well and you should be proud of the job you did hosting your first wrestling tournament.

6)      The mat grew:  Thanks to Lee Yielding, Pat Boland and Dean Paugh for coordinating the transportation of the mats. – This is no “light” task.

7)      Parents:  Thank you to all of you who are always so welling to help on whatever is required.  We could not do this without your time and energy.

8)      Coaches:  As always, you did a great job of coaching our kids and did whatever is asked to help make this tournament great.

These tournaments are one of our primary fundraisers for Vestavia Wrestling.  The proceeds from the tournaments we host help offset the cost of running our program.   This allows us to keep the youth registration cost at a fair price so more kids have the opportunity to wrestle.

We will be hosting one more tournament the weekend of January 30th at VHHS.  We will need everyone’s help and support again.  Please mark your calendars for this weekend.

wrestling update- goal setting and tournament reminder

Parents,

Attached are the results of the Tallassee tournament.  We had a small group of wrestlers but we had good results. (see attached)

Practice:

We will be back to our normal practice times the week of  Monday, January 4th.  As a reminder our January 4th practice will be used to training the parents on how to score a wrestling match.  Please see email sent by Dean Paugh last week.  It is also posted on our website in the news and information section.

Tournament:

We are hosting our tournament this weekend at Liberty Park Middle School.  We will need everyone’s help to make this successful.  You should have received emails from Allyson McLean regarding volunteer times and where to serve.  Please sign up today.  We have a lot work to do this week.

Goal setting:

I believe wrestling teaches our sons a great deal about life.  To borrow a quote from an article about wrestling:

“So what are these lessons of life that our great sport teaches you? I suppose they are infinite, but allow me to pinpoint a few: intensity, focus, discipline, goal-setting, determination and perseverance. To be successful on the mats, in school, or in the work place, you must possess these characteristics. I feel wrestling can teach you these better than any other sport.”

Now that we have 3 tournaments behind us and everyone has some expectations, I am asking each of you to discuss setting a wrestling goal with your son.  This is between you and him.  The goal can be at any level.  It can be to  win the state championship, win a match, place in a tournament, place in state, not get pinned, etc.  Attached is a goal sheet where you can write down one goal and 3 things your son is committing to do to reach his goal.

If your son fills out the sheet and turns the sheet in to me by Thursday, January 7th, then if he accomplished his goal by the end of the season, he will be recognized at the end of the year team party for his achievement.   In order to keep up with his goals, I need your help.  Once your son achieves his goal please send your team mom an email that states your son has reached they goal that he has set.

Please turn in by January 7th, If  you turn it in later than the 7th it will not be recognized at the end of the year.  This is an administrative challenge to keep up with so please bring it on the 7th if you want to participate.

Our team is doing great.  It is time to go to the next level.

David
